The Regional Dermatology Training Centre (RDTC)

RDTC is carrying on and has been developing community intervention programmes/ projects since its establishment in 1992, aimed at improving prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of skin diseases, Leprosy and Sexually Transmitted Infections in sub-Saharan Africa through training of appropriate health care workers with emphasis on a community-oriented approach.

Among its many specific objectives, we provide outreach care activities to the community geared toward prevention of skin cancers through early detection and treatment of its precursors as part of its overall contribution in dermatological care activities.

The Comprehensive Care Programme for PWAs

The Comprehensive Care Programme for PWAs
is an RDTC based programme, that was started in 1993 with the aim of assisting hundreds of PWAs (Persons with Albinisms)with prevention of cancer and treatment of complications.

In finding a sustainable way to provide the PWAs of Tanzania quality preventive measurements, the RDTCalso launchedthe Kilimanjaro Sunscreen Care Unit (KSPU) in 2012. The unit based in RDTC manufactures local of sunscreen lotions to be delivered free of charge to PWAs in Tanzania.

Kilimanjaro Sunscreen Production Unit

Kilimanjaro Sunscreen Production Unit KSPU was established under RDTC in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to provide Persons with Albinism (PWAs) of Tanzania quality sunscreen protection.

The first phase of the project consisted of a Clinical Study where two sunscreen formulas where tested in order to get valuable information on affordability, efficacy, and mainly acceptance among the PWAs .

Xeroderma Pigmentation

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a rare genetic disorder that causes extreme sensitivity to ultraviolet (UV) light due to mutations in DNA repair genes. It leads to symptoms like freckling, sunburn, and an increased risk of skin cancers, including melanoma and basal cell carcinoma. Some individuals may also experience neurological complications. Management involves strict sun protection, regular skin examinations, and surgical treatment for skin lesions, along with education and support for patients and families.
